The benchmark initiative is the new code of practice to encourage the correct installation, commissioning and servicing of domestic central heating boilers and system equipment.
Its aims are to raise standards among professional installers, to build and maintain high safety standards in the industry. To improve customer satisfaction levels and make a contribution to the nations commitment to climate change.
Who supports the initiative?
Virtually everyone in every sector within the industry. Importantly, it also has support from key groups outside the industry that will help in its communication to the man and woman in the street.
How does it work?
A “logbook” is despatched with every appliance.
This is a vital document that needs to be completed by the installer at the time of the installation. It confirms that the boiler has been installed and commissioned according to the manufacturers instructions.
Without the logbook, manufacturers may refuse to respond to a call out from the householder, who will be advised that he or she must call back the installer, who has not fulfilled his obligations to record the information required by the initiative.
The logbook provides space for the recordings of regular servicing of the boiler / system and this can become a valuable document when, for example, the householder wishes to sell the property. The logbook will show a potential purchaser that the heating system has received regular professional attention during its lifetime.
Why this initiative?
To meet the aims as outlined above. Improvements in the quality of installation and commissioning of boiler / systems, the use of the correct products and techniques will lead to a raising of reputation amongst the general public of the industry, fewer problems following the installation of a central heating boiler and system.
It is particularly important that:
Central heating systems are properly flushed as specified.
The user is clearly instructed on the correct operation of the appliance, the benefits of regular servicing are explained – to maintain the efficiency and extend the life of the appliance.
